Newquay had barely woken up as Olivia made her way into work the next morning. The sky, still slightly dark, set a brooding cover over her early commute.

The truth was, originally, she’d taken the morning off. Supposedly to recover from Mills’ birthday celebration and the copious amounts of wine she was supposed to have knocked back, but after her fiasco with Lawrence, she hadn’t fully felt in the mood to drink too much, and she was glad for it.

The early morning call from DC Tim Harris about something he’d found had kickstarted her into action.

She made it to work in record time without much traffic on the roads, and the constable was there to meet her as she came out of the lift.

“I know you’re technically still on annual leave,” he said quickly, his voice spoken in hushed tones despite the other voices that carried through the communal office space. “But I didn’t want to explain it over the phone.”

He led her to his desk, and she put her bag down as he sat and unlocked his computer screen.

“What am I looking at?” she asked tilting her head as she looked at a police report.

“This,” he explained, “is a statement I took regarding a young man that’s been reported missing. It’s been a week now, and his flatmate—who is also his best friend—hasn’t seen or heard from him in that time.”

Olivia nodded, not sure where he was going with it.

“Riiight, okay,” she entertained. “No other sightings? No girlfriend that he’s been staying with...?”

Tim held a finger up to pause her.

“Well, I asked the flatmate to send me a photo of our missing guy, and this...” He clicked on his mouse and a photo popped up. “...was the one he finally managed to find and send over.”

Olivia gasped.

The image on the screen was of a smiling young man at what seemed to be a house party, and as DC Harris zoomed in, she saw the striking resemblance to Jordan, Ryan, and Michael.

“This can’t have been a coincidence,” she breathed, taking over the mouse to flick back to the report. “He must have been targeted by her too. Do we have a name?”

She scanned the document.

“My thoughts exactly,” Tim agreed. “And the name I was given was Luciano Rossi.”

Olivia stood upright and stared at him, the pieces sorting themselves together in her head.

“You don’t think...” she started, but her colleague was hot on her tails.

“That Luca is short for Luciano?” he asked. “Absolutely. I can go down there and get some more details if you like?”

Liv picked up her bag.

“Don’t worry,” she answered, taking a step back from the desk. “Text me the address, and I’ll head over there now.” She went to walk away but stopped and turned back to him. “What time will Dean get in?”

Tim checked his watch.

“In probably an hour and a bit. Maybe more,” he answered. “Shall I get him to give you a call when I see him?”

She contemplated it. Thought about what she might say to him in order to break the awkward tension that had grown since the previous night.
